Why now: Meijer in 2026

Checked Nov 2, 2026
New territory · 2025 to 2026Northeast Ohio is the new front

Meijer put nearly half a billion dollars into Northeast Ohio through 2025, opening Austintown, Medina and Richmond Heights, then Bainbridge Township in May 2026. Giant Eagle is the grocer shoppers there already know.

Supermarket News
Seventh state · 2026Western Pennsylvania is next

Meijer is buying land in western Pennsylvania, starting with a 159,000-square-foot supercenter planned in Cranberry Township and a second site being explored in Jackson Township. No opening dates are set. The closest store today is in Boardman, Ohio.

CBS Pittsburgh
Meijer Media · 2024 to 2026Closed loop, now wider reach

Meijer Media added closed-loop measurement across in-store and online sales in 2024, then brought in CTV and Pinterest in 2025. Geo-Graph adds a neighborhood layer: local cable, CTV and mobile aimed at the households nearest a rival.

How Meijer will know it worked

Matched no-ad areasOne in five cells is the control

Inside every market, cells are ranked by distance to the nearest Meijer and to the lead rival, and every fifth one is held out. Live and held-out cells share the same stores and the same competitor, so the only difference is the ads.

Read first in shopper dataWeekly response, not a wrap report

Each week, new loyalty sign-ups, first-time buyers and sales in live cells are compared with held-out cells. Cells that don't respond pause, and their budget moves to cells that do.

Then in store visitsLift where it counts

At the end of the six weeks, sales and store visits from live cells are read against held-out cells, market by market, through Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Christmas week.

Rival by rivalWhere conquest pays

Because every cell belongs to one rival group, lift is read separately against Kroger, Walmart and the regional grocers. The result tells Meijer where conquest pays and where to defend.
